The government’s decision to increase remuneration for teachers working under federal grants, early childhood development (ECD) facilitators and school employees will require an additional Rs 4.68983 billion in the current fiscal year. The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided to increase the existing remuneration grant for teachers working under the federal teaching support grant quota by 10 per cent.
Following the decision, the monthly remuneration of secondary-level teachers under the quota has increased from Rs 43,669 to Rs 48,058, while that of basic-level teachers has risen from Rs 34,730 to Rs 38,203.
Similarly, the federal government has increased the monthly remuneration grant for ECD facilitators, school employees and school support staff by Rs 5,000. Shree Prasad Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education and Sports, said an additional Rs 4.68983 billion would be required in the current fiscal year to implement the revised remuneration rates. He said the ministry had sought the Finance Ministry’s consent to arrange the additional budget in accordance with the government’s decision.
He said the pay increase would be implemented after the Finance Ministry provides its approval. Under the new arrangement, the monthly remuneration of ECD facilitators has increased from Rs 12,000 to Rs 17,000, that of school support staff from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000, and that of school employees handling accounting duties from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000.
Hansa Bahadur Shahi, president of the Nepal National Teachers’ Organisation, said a 10 per cent increase in line with the raise provided to other government employees was natural and positive. However, he said the monthly remuneration of ECD facilitators, school employees and school support staff should be increased to at least Rs 23,000.
Ganga Ram Tiwari, president of the School Employees Council, thanked the government for the pay increase and demanded that school employees be given the opportunity to serve in permanent positions.
