Nepali Congress divided over action against Govinda Raj Joshi

Nepali Congress leader Govinda Raj Joshi speaks with media in Damauli of Tanahun, on Sunday, November 5, 2017.

Kathmandu, July 7

The main opposition party Nepali Congress has been divided on whether to take any action against the party leader Govinda Raj Joshi for his role in the 2017 elections.

As the party is preparing to take action against its leaders and cadres who worked against the party’s official candidates in the elections, the leaders expressed contrasting opinions over the corruption convict leader.

Joshi had filed candidacy against the party’s official candidate and senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel in Tanahun district. After Paudel filed an application to the Election Commission demanding Joshi’s candidacy be scrapped on the basis of his conviction, the Commission had barred him from contesting the polls.

Therefore, some leaders have now demanded that Joshi be spared from action as his name was not there on the final list of the candidates. Others, however, have viewed that Joshi filing his nomination in the preliminary stage itself amounted to the violation of discipline.

The party’s disciplinary committee is consulting lawyers over the issue, according to its member Dhana Raj Gurung.
