7,000 broiler chicks seized near Morang border

Biratnagar, September 16

The Armed Police Force has seized 7,000 broiler chicks from a border area in Sunbarshi Municipality-8 of Morang district.

A team deployed from the Border Outpost Sikti of the Armed Police Force recovered the chicks at around 2:50 am Wednesday while they were being transported in 14 loads.

The group carrying the chicks fled after spotting the security personnel while approaching through a path in a paddy field.

The chicks are believed to have been smuggled into Nepal through an unauthorised route by taking advantage of the open border. They are estimated to be worth around Rs 700,000.

SP Gehendra Bahadur Bhandari, chief of the Armed Police Force in Morang, said the team recovered 7,000 broiler chicks packed in 140 cartons in an abandoned condition.

Nepali farmers and poultry businesses have been facing problems due to the illegal entry of chicks and poultry products through the border areas.
