7 killed in stampede at Ashokdham Temple in Bihar

Kathmandu, August 17

Seven people have died in a stampede at Ashokdham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, India. Lakhisarai Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shivam Kumar told the BBC that the incident occurred at Ashokdham Temple on Monday morning.

According to Kumar, seven people have so far died and six others were injured in the incident. The injured have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital. Lakhisarai District Officer Shailendra Kumar visited the Sadar Hospital to meet the injured and briefed journalists about the incident. According to him, all seven people who died were women.

“There was a long queue stretching from directly in front of Ashokdham Halt railway station to the temple. At the same time, two trains arrived at the station. Meanwhile, a rumour spread that an electricity pole had fallen, when in fact only an electric wire had snapped,” he said. “Following this, pressure increased in the queue of women on the left side, causing them to fall on top of one another.”
