Chitwan, September 2

The Chitwan National Park (CNP) has arrested 34 individuals who had been absconding after allegedly being involved in rhino poaching.

This marks the largest arrest of suspected one-horned rhino poachers within a year. Last year, the national park arrested six people on charges related to poaching pangolins. Additionally, those accused of killing two rhinos using traps were apprehended within nine days.

Chief Conservation Officer Dil Bahadur Purja Pun said, “We achieved remarkable success in conservation efforts last year. The arrest of a large number of poachers is a significant achievement.”

He further added, “We were able to arrest those accused of poaching two rhinos in the Sattarchuli area.” Six individuals were also arrested for possessing pangolin skins.

In recognition of their contributions to conservation, the Basantraj Mishra Foundation honoured CNP officials with a cash award of Rs 300,000. The officials honoured include Dil Bahadur Purja Pun, Divesh Shrestha, Prem Sharma, and an employee of the Gharial Breeding Center.
