11-foot deep pothole on Sorhakhutte-Balaju section

Kathmandu, July 3

An approximately 11-foot deep pothole has appeared on the Sorhakhutte-Balaju road section in Kathmandu, affecting vehicular movement.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Office, Ramshahpath, reported that vehicles are being directed to use a single lane on either side of the road.

At around 6 am today, a motorcycle with the registration number Ba 50 Pa 382, driven by Pathao rider Bikas Shakya, fell into the pothole in front of the Kumari Tole gate in Ward 16, Naya Bazar. Although the motorcycle was submerged in the hole, Shakya, originally from Morang and residing in Chabahil, Kathmandu, was unharmed.

The motorcycle was extracted by a team including Assistant Sub-Inspector Dipesh Adhikari from the Metropolitan Police and the Fire Brigade Office, New Road, using a crane.

Preparations are underway to cordon off and repair the pothole.

Municipal Police Inspector Prakash Pandit of Sorhakhutte stated that a pipe from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project burst, causing the 11-foot hole. According to him, a 42-inch pipe burst, damaging the road. The force of the water also broke the asphalt, creating a pool-like appearance.
