A comprehensive livestock vaccination programme has helped reduce the risk of infectious diseases among cattle, goats and pigs in Tanahun district, according to the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Services Expert Centre.
A total of 190,201 doses of vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, PPR and classical swine fever were administered across the district during fiscal year 2025/26.
According to centre chief Robinson Adhikari, 39,849 doses were administered against foot-and-mouth disease, 10,578 against lumpy skin disease, 131,471 against PPR and 8,300 against classical swine fever.
The programme covered around 50 per cent of eligible cattle and buffaloes against foot-and-mouth disease, 55 per cent of goats against PPR and 35 per cent of pigs against swine fever.
The vaccination campaign was conducted across all 10 local units, covering 85 wards and 1,113 settlements. A total of 93 vaccinators were mobilised to reach livestock farmers in coordination with local governments and relevant agencies.
Adhikari said no outbreaks of the targeted diseases had been reported in areas covered by the vaccination programme.
“Since the comprehensive vaccination programme was implemented, there have been no outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, PPR or swine fever in the district,” he said.
The programme had a budget of Rs 12 million, of which Rs 9.043 million was spent. Officials said preventive vaccination is more effective than treating diseases after they spread and helps protect livestock and reduce farmers’ financial losses.
