Transport minister refuses to answer parliamentary committee’s questions in front of stakeholders

Kathmandu, July 4

Minister for Transport and Physical Infrastructure Ragubir Mahaset refused to answer questions posed by lawmakers from Parliament’s development committee saying that he will not answer the questions in front of stakeholders.

The committee had called Minister Mahaset, Transport Ministry’s secretary and officials from the National Federation of Deaf Nepal to discuss the smart licence issue.

However, just before the meeting began Minister Mahaset said that asking a minister to speak in front of stakeholders was against the norms.

“The committee called us to question us. It is fine we are ready to answer the question posed by the committee. However, I will not answer the question in front of the committee because it is against the norms. Never has any committee asked a minister to do so,” said Mahaset.

He added that the normal thing to do was to hold separate discussion with both parties and then hold a collective discussion after that. On the other hand, committee chair Kalyani Khadka rebuffed Mahaset’s claim.
