Nepali-origin Sashwat Rana joins Sweden’s top club Malmö FF

Sashwat Rana, a footballer of Nepali origin, has been signed by Sweden’s top football club Malmö FF. Malmö has signed Rana on a professional contract.

Having lived and played in Denmark for a long time, this is Shashwat’s first professional contract. According to the club, the 18-year-old left-back has signed a three-year deal with Malmö.

Malmö is one of Sweden’s most renowned football clubs. It has won Sweden’s top-division league, Allsvenskan, a record 27 times. The club is pleased to have signed Rana until 2028.

The club’s Assistant Sports Director, Ola Toivomäki, said, “Shashwat is an excellent player with great potential. In the past two years, he has been an offensive full-back and has been performing very well.”

Malmö stated that Rana is technically an excellent left-back and confident in ball control and game management. Rana has expressed happiness after signing his professional contract with the club.

“I am very happy to sign with such a big club. After coming here, I have made a lot of progress, so the past two years have been very good for me. Now, I am excited to step into senior football and adapt myself to that level,” Shashwat said on Malmö’s official website. “Of course, I am looking forward to make my debut at Eleda Stadium.

At the end of 2022, he was signed by FC Copenhagen, a top-division club in Denmark. Until 2025, he was part of Copenhagen’s youth team, where he played in the U-17 and U-19 competitions.

Born and raised in Denmark, Rana had once come to Nepal to attend the closed training for the Nepali U-20 team for the SAFF U-20 Championship. He started playing football at the age of six and joined Copenhagen’s academy at 14, where his football skills developed significantly.

Sashwat Rana is the son of former Nepali karate player Bibek Rana and Sushila Hamal. He has previously played for Hellerup IK, Lyngby Boldklub, and FC Copenhagen.

Born and raised in Copenhagen, Rana played for Lyngby Boldklub until the age of 12 before moving to Copenhagen.
