Kathmandu, October 2

Nepal’s monsoon season is nearing its end, with meteorologists saying it is likely to withdraw from the country by Dashain.

According to meteorologists at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the monsoon could completely withdraw from Nepal by the Dashain festival. The monsoon entered Nepal through the eastern region on June 19 this year.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan said there is currently no significant weather system capable of bringing heavy rainfall to Nepal. The monsoon has already withdrawn from most parts of neighbouring India.

The monsoon is now expected to begin withdrawing from western Nepal as well.

“Based on the current indications, there is a possibility that the monsoon will withdraw by Dashain,” Maharjan said.

This year, Ghatasthapana falls on October 11, while Dashain’s main Tika festival will be observed on October 20.

Normally, Nepal’s monsoon season begins around June 13 and withdraws by October 2. However, the withdrawal date can vary from year to year.

Meteorologists have cautioned that the end of the monsoon does not necessarily mean an immediate end to rainfall. Light rain could still occur during Dashain.

Meteorologist Binod Pokharel has also said on social media that there could be occasional drizzle during Dashain, which may bring a noticeable chill to the weather.
