Portugal captain and all-time leading goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international football.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo made 232 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals. He is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Ronaldo led Portugal to the European Championship title in 2016, guiding the team to its first-ever triumph in the competition.
During the most recent international break, Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp after missing the match against Norway. Portugal defeated Norway 2-1 in the Nations League fixture. After the match, he went straight to the dressing room and did not join his teammates, who came onto the pitch to greet supporters in Oslo.
Following the incident, Ronaldo was handed an international match suspension and a fine. The controversy escalated further after he accused coach Jorge Jesus of failing to fulfil promises made to him.
