Kathmandu, November 3
National Planning Commission Vice-Chairperson Gunakar Bhatta has said that private and public investment should be promoted in a balanced manner.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (SEJON) in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Bhatta said investment decisions should take into account economic returns, social benefits and environmental risks.
He stressed that public investment should focus on decentralising development, which he said was currently concentrated in certain areas.
Bhatta said the government should provide infrastructure and other necessary facilities to create an investment-friendly environment in sectors where private investment has failed to materialise.
He also cautioned against the risks of concentrating multiple hydropower projects along a single river, saying that floods or other disasters could cause extensive damage in such circumstances.
