Kathmandu, October 27

A total of 174 workers at Everest Paper Mills Pvt Ltd have received Rs 63.66 million in outstanding wages and employment benefits following a prolonged legal and administrative battle.

According to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, the workers had initiated legal proceedings to claim their dues after a dispute with the mill’s management.

The payments were finally made through multiple cheques on October 16, in line with a Labour Court order and an agreement reached at the District Administration Office in Dhanusha, the ministry said.

Following repeated legal proceedings, the Labour Court had ordered the release of bank accounts to facilitate payment of Rs 58.66 million on March 31. However, the company failed to pay the workers even after the accounts were unfrozen.

The workers subsequently filed another petition, alleging contempt of court over the failure to implement the order.

On September 11, the bank accounts, assets and shares of the company’s shareholders were frozen again after the court’s decision remained unimplemented.

Following further administrative and legal action, the workers received Rs 58.66 million in outstanding dues, along with salaries for August and September, bringing the total payment to Rs 63.66 million.

The ministry said the payments had finally brought a long-delayed agreement and the Labour Court’s decision into full effect.
