Kathmandu, October 27

The surrealist play Bhag Bheda Bhag is all set to hit the stage at Mandala Theatre from October 28, Wednesday, offering audiences a satirical take on power, corruption and the flaws of contemporary social and political systems.

Set in a bizarre, imaginary world inhabited by humans and animals, Bhag Bheda Bhag explores how those in power manipulate systems to maintain their authority and how the structures built on deception eventually begin to crumble.

Written and directed by Samyog Guragain, with Santosh Giri serving as assistant director, the play will run until November 7. Performances will take place daily at 5:15 pm, except on Mondays. An additional show will be staged at 1 pm on Saturdays.

The play follows a master struggling to escape the consequences of his own lies as the web of fate tightens around him. Meanwhile, the lives confined within an enclosure begin to recognise their own existence and strength, gradually preparing to challenge the master’s control and dismantle the foundations of the fabricated system.

On stage, the boundaries between humans and animals become increasingly blurred. Animals begin to resemble humans, while humans appear more despicable than the creatures they dominate.

Despite its animal-centred title, Bhag Bheda Bhag uses an imaginary setting to reflect on contemporary society and its power structures. The play examines how development projects ostensibly designed to benefit the poor can be undermined by systemic loopholes and how those who benefit from the system can weaken the very structures they are supposed to uphold.

Through satire and surrealism, the production seeks to expose the contradictions of a system that promises development and progress while perpetuating exploitation and helplessness.
