The popular Hollywood franchise Fast & Furious is set to return as a new scripted television series. Streaming platform Peacock announced Thursday that it has officially greenlit a new series based on the franchise.
The series was first announced as being in development earlier this year at NBCUniversal’s Upfronts event. At the event in May, actor Vin Diesel said a scripted Fast & Furious series was being developed.
Diesel will also serve as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Sam Vincent of One Race, Neal H. Moritz and Pawan Shetty of the original films, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Chris Morgan of Chris Morgan Productions.
Mike Daniels, known for Sons of Anarchy, Shades of Blue and The Rockford Files, and Wolfe Coleman, associated with Shades of Blue and 9-1-1: Lone Star, will serve as co-showrunners. They will write the pilot episode and also serve as executive producers.
According to Peacock, the series is targeted to premiere by 2028. Its premiere is expected to coincide with the release of the franchise’s upcoming film Fast Forever, which is scheduled to hit theatres on March 17, 2028.
Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, will serve as the studio behind the series.
At the May Upfronts event, Diesel said fans had been asking for more content from Fast & Furious over the past decade, particularly expanded stories involving established characters.
The franchise has previously appeared on television. Netflix aired six seasons of the animated series Fast & Furious: Spy Racers from 2019 to 2021.
The Fast & Furious franchise marks its 25th anniversary this year. According to NBCUniversal, Universal Pictures released the first film, The Fast and the Furious, on June 22, 2001.
Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles street-racing culture, the film starred Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty. The story that began with the film later expanded into a global cultural phenomenon.
