The Federal Parliament Secretariat has launched a new Digital Parliament platform aimed at making parliamentary information, services, records and activities more organised, accessible, effective and transparent.
The platform, currently in its testing phase, was inaugurated by House of Representatives Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal and National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal.
At the launch event, Speaker Aryal said the platform brings together parliamentary information, the status of bills, the calendar, lawmakers’ attendance, and committee and sub-committee details into a single system.
He said the platform would also help digitise old parliamentary registers and documents related to Nepal’s parliamentary history, preserving them for centuries to come and making research easier. He argued that using technology was essential not just for the legislature but for the executive, judiciary and all three tiers of government to become more transparent, citizen-focused and trustworthy.
National Assembly Chair Dahal said shifting the work of parliament, its committees and the secretariat from traditional paper-based processes to a digital system would make the work faster, more transparent, effective and accountable.
He noted that although more young lawmakers are now part of parliament, the old habit of relying on printed documents persists, and said lawmakers and staff would need practical, high-quality orientation to adapt. While acknowledging that Nepal’s starting point looks modest by international standards, Dahal stressed that the digital system should be rolled out in phases, tailored to the country’s actual needs and circumstances.
