The government estimates that around 6,000 private homes were swept away by the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26.
The estimate was made by the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction. According to information shared by departments under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport during a media briefing on Tuesday, damage to private housing alone is estimated at around Rs 12 billion.
The department also estimates that 45 government and public buildings were damaged by the floods. The figures are still being assessed and could change as further assessments are carried out.
The government estimates that at least Rs 900 million would be needed to immediately construct temporary shelters for around 6,000 households, with one temporary shelter required for each affected family.
The scale of the damage is still being assessed as authorities continue relief, rescue and reconstruction efforts in the flood-affected areas.
