Kathmandu, August 27
The Supreme Court has refused to issue an interim order sought by Nepali Congress leaders Sher Bahadur Deuba and Purna Bahadur Khadka to halt the party’s general convention.
A bench comprising Justices Nahakul Subedi, Mahesh Sharma Paudel and Meghraj Pokharel issued the order.
Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Koirala confirmed that the court had declined to issue an interim order on the petition filed by Deuba and Khadka.
“The supplementary petition had sought an order to stop the general convention. The three-member full bench has refused to issue an interim order as requested,” Koirala said.
The court’s decision means the Nepali Congress establishment faction can continue its regular party activities for now. The Supreme Court has said no interim order will be issued at this stage, although it may issue any order it considers appropriate when hearing the review petition.
The Deuba-Khadka faction has rejected the leadership of Gagan Thapa, who was elected through the party’s special general convention.
Thapa’s faction, meanwhile, has already begun preparations for the 15th general convention, scheduled to be held from October 2 to 5.
