Kathmandu, August 27
Authorities are working to reopen the Prithivi Highway connecting Kathmandu and Muglin by Thursday afternoon after the road was blocked by mud and debris following the Rasuwa floods.
According to Shubharaj Neupane, deputy director general and spokesperson for the Department of Roads, crews are working to clear the large amounts of mud deposited on the highway by the flood.
“The road from Muglin to Galaudi and from Kathmandu to Baireni is clear. Around 13 kilometres of road between Baireni and Galaudi have been covered with mud at several locations,” Neupane said.
He said the heavy deposits have made it difficult to determine the condition of the road underneath.
“Except in special circumstances, work is underway to reopen the road by this afternoon,” he said.
According to Neupane, 15 pieces of equipment have been deployed since Wednesday night to clear the mud from the highway.
Work was halted after rainfall began after 10pm on Wednesday but resumed early Thursday morning, with the equipment being used to remove the accumulated debris.
The Prithivi Highway was damaged at several locations after the Bhotekoshi River flooded on Wednesday.
