Janakpurdham, August 7
Cases of electrical transformer theft are increasing in different districts of Madhesh Province. Administration Chief of Nepal Electricity Authority Madhesh Province Office, Janakpurdham, Kali Charan Yadav told that 99 electrical transformers were stolen in the last five years.
Yadav added that the theft cases have increased as the copper wire used in transformers fetches a high price in the market. The highest number of transformers was stolen from Mahottari in five years, standing at 35, followed by 14 in Dhanusha, 10 in Rautahat, nine each in Sarlahi and Siraha, three in Saptari and two in Parsa. The stolen transformers had a capacity of 15-200 kV. Farmers in those districts have been facing problems irrigating their land due to the missing transformers, as the power supply is disrupted due to this.
The farmers have demanded that the concerned bodies install new transformers by arresting those involved in stealing transformers. Deputy Inspector General at Madhesh Province Police Office, Janakpurdham, Om Prasad Adhikari, shared that activities are underway to search for the stolen transformers.
