Former Minister of State Gobind Nath Upreti passed away today at the age of 82. He died at his residence in Bhumlu Rural Municipality-8 of Kavrepalanchok.
Ward Chairperson Motilal Tamang said Upreti passed away at around 3 am today. He had been suffering from a prolonged respiratory illness. Following the death of his wife during the COVID-19 pandemic, he had been under the care of his nephew, Bishnu Bahadur.
A long-time participant in the leftist movement, Upreti was widely known in the eastern Koshi region as the “Red Tiger.”
He had served as a lawmaker and later as Minister of State for Labour. After the unification of ML, he was active in UML politics. Following the split of UML, he was involved with (NCP) ML and later led an independent political life. In recent years, he had been associated with the then Maoist Centre and remained active in the leftist movement.
Upreti made significant contributions to the development of Kavrepalanchok, particularly the eastern Koshi region.
Ward Chairperson Lama said his last rites will be performed today at Dolalghat.
