161 Nepalis arrested in Malaysia in overnight raids

Kathmandu, February 21

A total of 971 illegal migrants, including 161 Nepalis were arrested in different parts of Malaysia on Sunday night.

Malaysia’s state-run news agency said the arrest foreign workers did not have identification document, had overstayed or held unrecognised cards of the UN High Commission for Refugees.

Local police said that in coordinated raids that went on for more than two hours,  more than 2,000 foreigners’ papers were checked.

According to the Malaysian government, more than 2 million illegal migrants are living in the country. The government had been under tremendous pressure to act to take the situation under control.
