Kathmandu, June 6
Women leaders, activists, and policymakers from Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, and other South Asian countries gathered in Kathmandu for a landmark regional dialogue on “Women, Peace and Security: South Asian Experiences.” Held at the Himalaya Hotel, the event aimed to share experiences, strengthen solidarity, and push forward the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
According to a press statement, organised by the Women’s Political Academy and Jagaran Nepal, the dialogue featured powerful reflections from grassroots leaders and WPS experts. Sarmila Karki stressed the importance of South-South collaboration, while Sri Lankan activist Nimalka Fernando highlighted shared traumas and called for stronger female political representation.
Nepal’s Bandana Rana showcased national progress under UNSCR 1325 and 1820, but noted ongoing challenges. Conflict survivor and MP Maina Karki shared her personal journey from loss to leadership, urging faster justice reforms. Indian scholar Rita Manchanda emphasised localising the WPS agenda and expanding it beyond security sectors.
Participants called for a regional WPS framework and deeper civil society engagement to bring lasting change.
