Kathmandu, December 24

The  Federation of Nepali Journalists, the umbrella organisation of working journalists from across the country, has expressed its serious concerns over reports that Nepal Police has summoned some online media over a news story they carried in relation to the performance appraisal of then DIG Nawaraj Silwal.

The Federation says police do not have any right to questions journalists over the source of news they publish.

The national police organisation is currently investigating into the alleged forgery committed by Silwal, who now has been elected a lawmaker. In this context, it has asked some online journalists to inform Nepal Police about from where they got Silwal’s performance papers.

But, the Federation says such acts breach the right to press freedom and right to information.

The Federation has urged all stakeholders not to repeat such incidents and let journalists work in a free and fair environment.
