Wangdi Gurung, a resident of Haldibari Rural Municipality-3 in southern Jhapa, was killed in an elephant attack.

According to the District Police Office, the 65-year-old Gurung was attacked by the elephant while returning home after collecting fodder from the local Rankali Community Forest.

District Police Office spokesperson, Krishna Kumar Chand, stated that Gurung was fatally attacked by the elephant this morning while on his way back from the forest, resulting in his death at the scene.

“We received information that Gurung was trampled to death by a wild elephant. A police team reached the scene immediately after being notified,” said Chand. “We have deployed police personnel to secure the area. The legal process is underway to hand over the body to the family.”

In recent years, several residents living near forests in Jhapa have died due to attacks by wild elephants. People collecting grass, firewood, mushrooms, and fern shoots, or grazing livestock in the forest, have increasingly fallen victim to such attacks.
