Veteran music composer and singer Ganesh Rasik has passed away on Sunday afternoon at the Nepal Cancer Hospital, Hattiban, Lalitpur.
Rasik, 78, had been battling prostate cancer for the past five years. According to his relative and composer Basanta Mukarung, Rasik passed away at around 11 AM at the hospital.
Asta Lama, President of the Musicians’ Association, also confirmed Rasik’s passing. His final rites will be conducted after the arrival of his only daughter from the United Kingdom. His body has been kept at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
Ganesh Rasik emerged in the Nepali music scene nearly five decades ago through the musical group ‘Lekali.’ He was a multifaceted figure in Nepali music and culture. His songwriting and singing eloquently captured the hardships, struggles, aspirations, and dreams of Nepali society—with a simple yet profound depth.
In addition to music, Rasik also contributed significantly to Nepali literature, publishing over a dozen collections in various genres, including stories, poems, novels, memoirs, and essays.
He was born on 20 September 1947 in Naulagau, Ward No. 2 of Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality in Bhojpur district, to parents Narottam Rai and Ratna Maya Rai.
Rasik had a formal education up to the Bachelor’s level. Starting his career as a regular employee, he served in various departments and institutions for 31 years, holding significant responsibilities.
He held several high-level positions in prestigious institutions, including, Chairperson and General Manager of Ratna Recording Corporation, General Manager of the Cultural Corporation, Chairperson and General Manager of Sajha Publications, Member Secretary of the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama.
Ganesh Rasik belonged to the second generation of Nepali musicians, following legendary figures such as Nati Kaji, Amber Gurung, Bachchu Kailash, Narayan Gopal, Gopal Yonjan, Tara Devi, and Aruna Lama. His music reflected deep values, love for nature, and social realities. His local essence, melodious voice, and heartfelt patriotism defined his lyrics and compositions.
