Kathmandu, August 22
Govinda Acharya has been elected president of Federation of Nepali Journalists as the Nepali Congress and the Maoist-centre aligned candidates registered big wins in the elections held on Monday,
Acharya, who was backed by the Nepali Congress-aligned Press Union and the Maoist Centre-aligned Press Centre, beat his rival Tirtha Koirala, the candidate supported by UML-aligned Press Chautari by a 105 votes. While Acharya secured 732 votes, Koirala received 627.
Other candidates in the fray for the top post were: Ujir Magar (54), Indra Bahadur Raut (20) and Bhawana Bidrohi (6).
Similarly, Bipul Pokhrel has been elected vice-president in the ‘open’ category and Dileep Thapamagar in the ‘inclusive’ category. Ramesh Bishta is the new general secretary and Ram Prasad Dahal the new secretary (open category).
Laxmi Pun has been elected secretary in the women’s seat, Uday GM has been elected to the same post in the indigenous quota, Shital Prasad Mahato in Madheshi quota, Rem Bahadur Biswakarma in the Dalit quota, and Prakash Thapa in associate quota. Rajesh Mishra is the new treasurer.
