Kathmandu, November 5
The main opposition Nepali Congress is holding an informal meeting of its office-bearers today.
The meeting is scheduled for 3 pm on Thursday at the party’s central office in Sanepa.
A leader said the meeting aims to shape the party’s position on recent political developments. These include the government’s decision to remove Dan Bahadur Karki as Inspector General of Police and appoint Manoj Karki in his place.
A recently released audio recording of Inam Sapkota has also drawn attention. In it, party president Gagan Thapa is said to have spent Rs 180 million to secure the party’s legitimacy. Congress has called the matter a government conspiracy. The party believes the government is making baseless, fabricated and planned allegations to question its legitimacy.
Congress has said the government is trying to silence the voice of the opposition. It says it will mount a political and legal challenge against interference in judicial independence and press freedom. The party has also demanded a parliamentary probe committee into the government’s recent controversial actions, including the crackdown on journalists. It has urged the government to convene a meeting of the House of Representatives as soon as possible.
General Secretary Dila Sangraula confirmed the informal meeting.
“It is not a formal meeting. We are holding an informal discussion. We will talk about current issues,” she said.
Joint General Secretary Manojmani Acharya said the meeting would discuss current matters concerning the party organisation. District and provincial conventions are still pending. He said the meeting would let the general secretaries and joint general secretaries discuss those matters.
