Kalyan Raj Sharma, Nepal’s proposed ambassador to China, has presented his commitments ahead of his parliamentary hearing at the Parliamentary Hearing Committee in Singha Durbar.

Sharma said his objective was to maintain political trust while delivering practical benefits to the Nepali people and government. He also pledged to uphold Nepal’s national interests with integrity while strengthening trust between the governments of Nepal and China.

As part of his diplomatic priorities, Sharma plans to maintain regular engagement with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Communist Party, the State Council, the National People’s Congress, provincial governments, universities and think tanks.

He has also pledged to build a strong and respected Nepali diplomatic mission, address misunderstandings through sustained engagement and follow-up, and prioritise Nepali institutions with clear mandates.

Focus on infrastructure and trade

Kalyan Raj Sharma said he would pay particular attention to priority infrastructure projects, including the Rasuwagadhi Bridge, the Syafrubesi–Rasuwagadhi road, the Araniko Highway, the Kathmandu Ring Road, the Kerung–Rasuwagadhi–Chilime transmission line and the Kimathanka road.

He also pledged to monitor progress in promoting exports of processed buffalo meat, citrus fruits, grass and silage, as well as the development of industrial parks and special economic zones.

Under his trade and export promotion agenda, Sharma proposed adopting the strategy of “Made in Nepal, branded in Nepal, sold in China” to strengthen Nepali products’ presence in the Chinese market.

Connectivity and transit cooperation

Kalyan Raj Sharma identified connectivity, transit and border cooperation as other key priorities.

His commitments include ensuring the regular operation and improvement of 14 traditional border trade points and maximising the use of four seaports and three inland dry ports available to Nepal under the Nepal–China Transit Transport Agreement.

He also pledged to closely monitor the prospects for expanding rail connectivity through Kerung, while prioritising engagement with Lhasa, cooperation with border communities and improvements in transit arrangements.

Sharma further said he would work to make high-level visits more purposeful and ensure systematic follow-up after each visit.
