Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit Nepal in March next year, multiple sources say.

Commenting on newspaper reports that the northern neighbour has listed Nepal as a country that the President would visit and preparations have already begun, leaders of the leftist alliance which is preparing to lead the next government here say they have also received information from the Chinese side.

“The Chinese side has informed us that they have begun preparations to hold the visit in coming March,” a top leader of the CPN-Maoist Centre tells Onlinekhabar, “Therefore, we have also launched necessary preparations.”

According to the source, top leaders of the leftist alliance are excited about the visit as it will be of a great significance politically and diplomatically.

The two countries have been discussing possible date for the visit for over two years. Xi’s visit was said to take place during the premiership of CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli in 2015-16. It, however, was cancelled citing unstable political developments here.

Oli is likely to be elected the Prime Minister again within next one month. It has been learned that the Chinese side has begun preparations for the visit after it has been certain that the leftist alliance will form the government here after recent parliamentary polls.
