Kathmandu, February 20

The provincial government in Province 6 of Nepal is preparing to impose a ban on import of vegetables in a bid to make the financially backward Province independent and lead it towards prosperity, says the Agriculture Minister.

Provincial Minister for Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperation Bimala KC says the first meeting of the government has decided to establish foundations for making the Province ‘organic’.

KC says the government will make the Province independent for vegetables and food items. A long-term plan will be formulated to achieve the objective, according to her.

Almost all parts of Nepal currently import a large amount of vegetables from India.

“We know it is not immediately possible,” KC, also the spokesperson for her government, says, “But, we will begin our job after formulating a long-term plan.”

KC says she will consult concerned stakeholders and experts will be consulted to finalise the plan.
