Kathmandu, November 3

The CPN-UML has said it will suspend membership of party leaders and cadres who have filed nominations for upcoming elections against official candidates of the leftist alliance if they do not pull out.

The party has urged all rebel candidates to withdraw the nominations and engage in the poll campaign for the leftist alliance, which it is a part of.

UML politburo member Bishnu Rimal says the party has received reports of rebellion in Udayapur, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Bara and Sarlahi districts. In Udayapur, politburo member Jagannath Khatiwada has filed papers against the leftist alliance’s official candidate Suresh Kumar Rai of CPN-Maoist Centre.

“But, our party has 500,000 members and everyone does not get the ticket. I am a politburo member, but I could not get the ticket. It does not mean that I have to be a rebel candidate,” says Rimal.

Some leaders and cadres of the party had filed candidacy against official alliance candidates for the first phase of elections as well. But, most of them had withdrawn the names after the party warned of disciplinary action.
