UML strategy for local election: Beat ruling alliance, Congress

Kathmandu, April 5

Nepal’s principal opposition party UML’s strategy for the upcoming local elections is to stop the ruling alliance from forging partnerships at the local level.

As part of the strategy, the UML has decided to try to ally with the RPP, a ruling coalition partner, in places where the UML is not confident about a win.

Party leaders believe that the strategy will help contain the Nepali Congress, the main rival of the UML. The party has understood that alliances with the Maoists and the RPP will determine who wins majority of the seats in the elections.

The UML leaders are in conversation with both the parties to forge electoral alliances. Just yesterday, KP Oli met RPP chief Kamal Thapa to discuss the possibility of an alliance. KP’s Oli’s pitch is that nationalist forces should unite in the face of adversity.

But both parties have decided not to openly talk about the alliance until details are materialised.
