Kathmandu, May 24

Two more climbers have died on Mount Everest on Thursday. With this, the number of climbers killed on the highest peak of the world this season has reached seven.

Ing Landgraf, 65, from Austria and Nihal Bagwan, 27, from India died on Everest after returning from the summit.

According to Subas Shrestha, an official at Himalaya Vision Treks Expedition, Landgraf died at the second step on the north side (Tibet) of the mountain due to mountain sickness.

Likewise, Bagwan died in Camp IV after being rescued by high altitude climbers from the balcony area. He is the eighth Indian to die on 8,000 metre peaks this climbing season.

“Nihal was tired while returning form the summit. Our Sherpas brought him down from balcony area to Camp 4 at around 11 pm, but he wasn’t fully conscious. He died around 11:30 pm in his tent. His body is being brought back to base camp,” adds Krishma Poudel, an official at Peak Promotion.

A total of 16 people have died on various 8,000 metre mountains in Nepal since the climbing season began.
