Kathmandu, June 13

Traffic police have removed the rule of charging Rs 200 fine on people crossing roads from places other than zebra crossings or overhead bridges.

The rule was imposed on May 30, but had faced criticism from various walks of life as many major city roads did not have adequate zebra crossings or bridges to let pedestrians cross the roads.

However, despite the removal of the fine, police say those crossing the roads haphazardly will be required to attend a class on traffic rules.

The modification was made after Home Minister Janardan Sharma told police to change the system as many members of the public complained of trouble.

Sharma had summoned Nepal Police Chief Prakash Aryal and Metropolitan Traffic Police Division Chief Mingmar Lama for a discussion today.

Around 20,000 jaywalkers have been booked since May 30, according to traffic police.
