Top leaders fail to end stalemate as both sides remain adamant

Top leaders of big three parties hold a meeting in Baluwatar, on Tuesday, July 11, 2015.

Kathmandu, July 10

A meeting of top leaders of major three political parties held on Tuesday failed to make any headway toward ending the stalemate about constitution amendment as both ruling and opposition sides remained adamant on their stances.

Whereas Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba sought the support of main opposition CPN-UML to pass the constitution amendment bill currently pending in the House, UML Chair KP Sharma Oli said the bill should be put on hold till January next year by when both provincial and federal polls will conclude.

Deuba was of the view that amendment was a must in order to convince the agitating Rastriya Janata Party Nepal to participate in the polls and make the overall constitution implementation smooth, but Oli discarded the request.

The leaders will holder another meeting after discussing the recent developments with the RJPN, according to Maoist leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha.
