Tight security measures in place to avoid vote counting disruption

Vote counting is underway in Ghorahi of Dang district, on Thursday, June 29, 2017.

Kathmandu, June 29

The government has adopted tight security measures at vote counting venues in provinces 1, 5 and 7 so as to avoid any disruption during the counting.

Earlier, the Election Commission had also said it would tighten security so that what happened in Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Chitwan district during the first phase of local level elections would not repeat.

As many as 90 ballot papers had been torn during the counting in Bharatpur and results have not yet been published. After political parties could not agree on whether to redo voting in the particular ward, from where the ballot papers were torn, or to resume the counting, the issue is currently sub-judice at the Supreme Court.

Therefore, in Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City of Dang district, representatives of candidates have been barred from touching the ballot papers with ropes.

Likewise, at a vote counting venue in Taplejung district, the representatives have been made to sit on benches while the counting is underway on the floor.
