Supreme Court refuses to issue stay order over poll staff’s voting right

Kathmandu, November 6

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to issue an interim order in response to a writ demanding that government staff to be deployed to prepare and conduct voting in constituencies other than their own be granted with the voting right.

A division bench of justices Deepak Raj Joshi and Dambar Bahadur Shahi today said the petition did not demand the cancellation of any particular decision made by the  Election Commission; hence the stay order would not be necessary.

The bench assured that the demand would be addressed in the final verdict.

It also maintained that the Commission would take an appropriate decision in line with spirits of the constitution’s Article 84.5 which guarantees voting right to any person who has completed 18 years of age.
