Setback for Nepal government: Apex court order against Nepal Police IG appointment

Kathmandu, February 12

The Supreme Court on Sunday issued an interim order to the Prachanda government not to implement the decision on the elevation of Nepal Police DIG Jaya Bahadur Chand as IGP, dealing a blow to the government. The order came the day the government decided to elevate AIG Chand as Nepal Police chief, a move that has drawn fire from several quarters for undermining issues like seniority.

Hours after the government decision (the government had made this decision on Sunday morning), a single bench of Chief Justice Sushila Karki told the government not to implement it. At the same time, the court has sought files regarding Chand’s elevation as Nepal Police chief and appraisals of 13 DIGs.

The court, according to advocate Bhimarjun Acharya, has directed the defendants to appear in court.
