RPP statute controversy: Protesters clash with police outside Election Commission

Kathmandu, March 20

Rastriya Parajatantra Party supporters clashed with riot police outside the Election Commission’s office in Kathmandu as the protested the EC’s decision to remove ‘Hindu state’ and ‘monarchy’ from the party’s statute.

The protestors who gathered at the Shanti Vatika in Ratna Park before converging at the Commission’s office in Kantipath, shouted slogans against the EC demanding that the party be allowed to retain its ideology and goals.

Police interevened in the rally near Kantipath and fired tear gas cannisters at the crowd as it tried to breach a security cordon. RPP supporters pelted stones at the security personnel.

Traffic was brought to a standstill in the area following the RPP’s demonstrations.
