Restaurateur Akabar Shah detained in connection with gold smuggling

Kathmandu, June 22

A special team formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate into the organised gold smuggling activities in Nepal on Thursday arrested restaurant entrepreneur Akabar Shah for his alleged involvement in the illegal activities.

Investigators have suspected that he was one of the investors for smuggled gold.

A police team detained him from Kathmandu and began an interrogation, a source at the committee informs.

Shah is said to be a relative of murdered media entrepreneur Jamim Shah.

Just three days ago, the committees has arrested trader Bimal Poddar in connection to the case. Police also raided his residential apartment yesterday.

Earlier, based on the investigation carried out by the committee, the Morang District Attorney Office had filed a case against 63 persons including former and current police officials, traders and alleged smugglers among others.
