The National Reconstruction Authority, the government body formed to spearhead and supervise reconstruction activities following the 2015 earthquake, says the government gave it just half the budget the Authority needs to meet its annual target.

The Authority’s Chief Executive Officer Yubaraj Bhusal says the government had allocated just Rs 53 billion for the current fiscal year though it needed as much as Rs 103 billion. Therefore, the Authority has demanded Rs 50 billion more, according to him.

He says most of the allocated budget has already been spent. Therefore, the Ministry of Finance has already been informed about the economic status, according to the official.

The Authority has targeted to complete the reconstruction of around 460,000 individual houses by the end of this fiscal year (mid-July).

Te Authority’s officials suggest that the government hold another donors’ conference next year to general funding necessary to complete remaining reconstruction works on time.
