Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has inaugurated the country’s first shipping office in Kathmandu.

The office was set up as per instructions from the PM Oli to pave the way fro Nepal’s flag-bearing ship to come into operation, said Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth. “This is a historic day for Nepal as it prepares to use cheaper means of transport for international trade,” he added.

“When the Prime Minister mentioned that he will bring a ship into Nepal, many ridiculed the idea. However, that gave us the energy to work hard and make sure that we paved the way for a waterway even in a landlocked country like Nepal,” he said.

According to Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gokul Baskota, a total of 16 staffers will be hired to work at the office, which will be headed by under-secretary.

The Cabinet Meeting on January 13 decided to open the office with a provision of a senior divisional engineer, a section officer, a law ministry officer, an accounts officer, a mechanical engineer, an irrigation engineer, and a highway engineer.
