Conceding to the demand of transport entrepreneurs, the government is preparing to lift suspension on operation of bank accounts of their committees.

Few months ago, the government had decided to stop renewal and registration of such committees as NGOs. In the meantime, the government had also decided to suspend all bank accounts of such committees so that they can effectively turn functionless.

However, the government is now withdrawing from the decision after the transporters put this as a precondition to open advance booking of tickets for upcoming Dashain festival. They have agreed to open the booking from this Friday.

The transporters have argued that they do not have any money to prepare for the booking if the suspension was not lifted.

Though the government will lift the suspension, some other measures will be adopted to facilitate the committees’ transformation into private companies, according to the Department of Transport Management’s spokesperson Gokarna Prasad Upadhyaya.

He clarifies that the Department is not in the position of making the final decision. “We have extended our suggestions as per a directive from the Prime Minister. The Home Ministry and the Finance Ministry will make the final call.”
