Kathmandu, February 1
Police in Kathmandu on Friday interfered in a protest carried out by an organisation of medical doctors in solidarity with medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC.
Foiling the protest, they also detained 17 demonstrators from outside the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where Dr KC is staging a fast-unto-death for past 24 days.
The detainees have been taken to Nepal Police Club in Bhrikutimandap, according to Resident Doctors’ Association.
Dr Pritam Subedi, one of the aides of Dr KC, says police used force to foil the demonstration though it was peaceful.
Earlier, Nepal Medical Association, the umbrella organisation of Nepali medical doctors, had decided to halt health services except the emergency ones at all facilities across the country from Friday, in solidarity with the sexagenarian orthopaedic surgeon.
Meanwhile, doctors’ associations close to the ruling Nepal Communist Party have called on their members not to take part in any protest citing Dr KC’s demands are more political than professional.
