Police action in Saptari was meant to avert huge losses, says Home Minister Nidhi

Kathmandu, March 10

Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi told the Parliament on Friday security forces used force under compulsion in Saptari, in a bid to avert huge losses. He was referring to the police firing during the CPN-UML’s Mechi-Mahakali Campaign in Saptari district headquarters Rajbiraj, which killed four people protesting the programme.

Minister Nidhi was responding to lawmakers’ demand that the government inform the Parliament about the incident.

He said: While the CPN-UML programme was on, a mob equipped with countrymade weapons and petrol bombs was trying to enter the programme venue. Security personnel tried to stop it at first. But when it became clear that there will be huge losses without the use of force, they opened fire with orders from responsible security officials.
