PM to leave for New York Tuesday, to address UN General Assembly Saturday

Kathmandu, September 17

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is leaving for New York on Tuesday to take part in the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He will address the Assembly on Saturday, September 23. Likewise, Deuba, as the leader of Nepali delegation, will hold the meeting with UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres the same day.

On the sidelines of the Assembly, Deuba will have bilateral meetings with Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi  on Thursday, the Ministry says.

He will meet Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid the next day.

On his way back to Nepal, PM Deuba will go to Muscat of Oman on September 24 to address heads of Nepali diplomatic missions based in the Gulf region and provide instructions on matters relating to promoting and protecting interest of Nepal and Nepali migrant workers in the region, the statement says, Minister for Labour and Employment Farmullah Mansur will join the delegation in Muscat.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara will leave for New York today. Nepal is hosting an informal session of the SAARC Council of Ministers on the sidelines of the Assembly in New York and Mahara will chair the meeting on Thursday.

Nepali delegation to the 72nd Assembly will comprise, among others, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Asha Koirala; Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Dinesh Bhattarai; Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi; Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, Durga Prasad Bhattarai and other senior government officials.

The delegation with return to Kathmandu on September 28.
