Oli govt needs to correct its course: NC leader Acharya

Kathmandu, August 23

Nepali Congress senior leader Mahesh Acharya says that a government with two-third majority had the opportunity to do so many things, but the ruling alliance is spending time on petty endevours.

Former Minister Acharya, in an interview with Onlinekhabar, said that instead of wasting time and energy on a tussle with the opposition on issues such as the appointment of the Chief Justice, the government should have focussed on the agenda of economic development.

“The people voted for a stable government. Not only in the centre, the NCP has a majority government in six provinces. It is also a part of the ruling coalition in Province 2. The time is now right for deep economic reforms and preparing ambitious plans,” he said.

He added that the Prime Minister should adopt a more reconciliatory approach when dealing with the opposition. “A government does not become stable just because it has the numbers. People from the indigenous, Madheshi, Tharu and dalit communities have felt let down; the Prime Minister needs to talk to them as well.”

Achayar said that the Nepali Congress has also been unable to present itself as a strong opposition. “The opposition is draining all its energy trying to manage internal issues. The leader of the opposition is under a lot of pressure after the electoral loss. He too is spending time facing allegations levelled against him,” said Acharya referring to party chief Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The opposition should have made its presence felt in Parliament, he concluded.
