Kathmandu, May 17

Two chairmen of the ruling Nepal Communist Party–KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal–have made similar statements regarding recognising the ideology developed by late Madan Bhandari in their unified party.

Both of them have said the party should not completely give up Bhandari’s thought, known as People’s Multiparty Democracy; however, that is not the limit.

Whereas second generation leaders of the party, particularly those of the former CPN-UML, have been demanding that Bhandari’s thought be the guiding principle of the party, both the chairmen have said it is not enough.

Before its merger with the Dahal-led CPN-Maoist Centre to form the NCP on this day last year, Oli-led CPN-UML had recognises the ideology as the guiding principle.

“Our party will not give up his thought, it cannot give up that,” Oli said addressing a function organised on the occasion of Bhandari’s 26th death anniversary today, “But, it is not for chanting and mugging up as a formula. What he said is not the final version.”

“We will creatively use his thought as time moves as a guiding principle.”

Likewise, Dahal questioned, “Shall we just repeat what comrade Madan said or are we expected to develop further on the basis of his thought?” before he answered, “His thought should be revised and developed. Repeating old issues does not work.”

He claimed that the two chairpersons agreed to keep the party’s ideology continuously developing while unifying the parties last year.
