NRB staff get allowance up to 204 per cent of salary: Auditor General’s report

Kathmandu, April 12

One of the major tasks of the central bank of any country is to regulate the entire banking sector of the country including all banks and financial institutions. Accordingly, Nepal Rastra Bank also takes some initiatives to control irregularities in the banking sector.

However, it has not been revealed that the central bank has failed to control irregularities taking place within its own office for the latest annual report of Office of the Auditor General has pointed out that its staff are getting a hefty allowance, which sometimes become as much as 204 per cent of their regular salary.

The report mentions that there are 14 kinds of allowances in the central bank. Whereas seven allowances are applicable to all staff, other seven are restricted to particular groups only.

The NRB spends more than one billion rupees in allowance every year.

There are total 1,229 staff working at the NRB including 1,097 in banking service and 132 in technical service, according to the NRB.

The NRB says around 15 per cent of its annual administration cost is allocated for allowances and other motivational activities.

The Auditor General’s report for the last fiscal year is being submitted to President Bidya Devi Bhandari today.
